FREE WEBINAR: What is Vertical Learning and Why Does it Matter?

INTENTION OF THE WEBINAR

Key to the source of human performance in a complex, volatile, and ambiguous world is the complexity with which people are able to make sense of their world. Such a capacity is key to being able to deal with the kinds of “wicked problems” so characteristic of today’s world.

“Vertical Learning” is a kind of learning that sets out to deliberately grow people’s capacity for complex sensemaking—for being able to operate effectively in the face of “wicked problems”.

In this webinar we explore the nature of Vertical Learning and why it is so pivotal in the face of today’s challenges and possibilities.

BACKGROUND

Much of the work we do in organizations depends on our ability to solve problems, make decisions, and take action in collective partnership with others.

Much of this ability arises from our skillfulness, knowledge, and competence—what developmental psychologists refer to with the term “horizontal” learning.

Until somewhat recently, such capability was perfectly sufficient.

But today’s world calls for a different kind of capability. One that points to the level of the complexity with which one can make sense of situations and events that are inherently complex, volatile, and ambiguous. What developmental psychologists refer to with the term “vertical” learning.

Vertical Learning is a form of learning in which there is a shift in how people make sense of their world, resulting in their being and acting in ways that are more generative, resourceful, and capable.

In this webinar, we introduce key concepts and ideas as they relate to vertical learning.

Outcomes of the Webinar

In this webinar you will

  • Understand the basic principles and ideas of vertical learning and why it is so critically important in today’s organizations and the world at large.

  • Learn what it means to evoke developmental learning—a form of learning that is necessarily very different from the modes of learning we are most accustomed to.

  • Have an experience of what it means to access one’s meaning-making construct.

  • Be inspired by the possibilities for human beings afforded by this way of looking at people and culture.

Michael Hamman will be your webinar host.
